Some advice and tips. Nothing should be taken for granted and use at your own risk and discretion!
- Try and meet in person to check the machine before you buy.
- Check for all the cables and cords, specifically any damage or scratches on the cords to ensure they all work
- Ask about any ‘Red Circle’ incidents, if they are getting death screens it’s likely you will inherit the problem. Once or twice a year is OK, anymore and it’s not worth it (unless it’s still under warranty), more info on Red Circle issues here
- Check for a warranty, if the Xbox is still covered try and extend the warranty, or get a new one – some companies offer warranties such as Square Trade Warranty.
- Run two different games through the machine, listen to the drive to make sure everything sounds smooth, if you can hear rattling and loud scratching noises this is a bad sign – if you’re willing to take a risk simply ask for a cheaper price.
- Check the controllers for use, look for sticky keys and responsiveness – a little bit sticky is fine, if it’s like running through gum ask for a cheaper price and get it cleaned
- Check the games, look for scratches and dents. Try and test the games before buying them. If you can’t test the games ask for some sort of guarantee the games work.
- Check the Xbox console for damage, scratches, dents or cracks. Large cracks are a bad sign.
- Once bought keep the machine in an open environment and don’t engage in marathon 5 hour sessions – let the beast cool to avoid Red ring incidents.
Good Luck. Remember nothing is ever reliable.
